A deadly ambush targeting a joint unit of Ethiopian troops and Oromo regional state security forces left scores dead. The incident took place in the town of Erero in Borena province in the volatile Oromo region of Ethiopia according to a report published by the Oromo branch of BBC News.

The joint unit of local security forces and Ethiopian troops where traveling in multiple military convoys as they came under fire. A total of 5 where killed, which include 4 soldiers and a pedestrian standing nearby.

Following the ambush, the culprits fled into the scene according to eyewitnesses that spoke with the Afaan Oromo branch of BBC.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The federal government of Ethiopia and the Oromo regional state administration are yet to comment on this latest string of violence.

The Oromo region of Ethiopia remains plagued by lawlessness, with basic rule and law non existent in most parts. Armed bandits, paramilitary factions and rogue militias continue to run wild as the government struggles to keep control of the situation.
