Al Shabaab fighters launched an overnight assault on an Ethiopian military base in the town of Halgan in Central Somalia.
Local contacts based in the town of Halgan confirm insurgents launched a ground assault targeting the grounds of the military base housing contingents of Ethiopia’s National Defense Force (ENDF).
Eyewitnesses reveal the assault was followed by an intense exchange of gunfire between both sides. The brunt of these clashes took place in the periphery of the Ethiopian military base.
The casualites from this encounter remain unknown. The area was cordoned off by Ethiopian troops after the encounter. The surviving militants are said to have disappeared into dark of the town following the clashes.
The town of Halgan, situated in Hiiraan province hosts one of the largest Ethiopian military bases in Central Somalia. The Ethiopian military maintains similar bases in outposts in the nearby towns of Maxaas and Makoori under the guise of the US led war on terror being waged in the country.
