Ethiopian troops reportedly committed a series of extrajudicial killings over the weekend in Ethiopia’s volatile Oromo region. Confirmed reports reveal Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) executed a civilian in the town of Nekemte in the conflict ridden Wollege province. The victim has been identified as Naol Misganu.

Similar incidents of extrajudicial killings where reported in the town of Najjo, where Ethiopian troops executed two brothers in cold blood during counter insurgency operations identified as Jote Taddese and Tamiru Taddese. Ethiopian troops also gunned down a farmer identified in the town of Buno Bedele. The victim has been identified by family members as Guyyasa Taye.

Ethiopian troops are reportedly engaged in rampant abductions of civilians in the rural area. Government forces are said to have abducted Kadir Ushe, a father of three who was taken from his home in Hawa Galan by the military at 5am in the morning. His dead body was later found nearby in the forest.

In the same area, the Ethiopian military burned down the houses of the following farmers of Ahimad Abdullaayi, Nuuriyyaa Dassee and Na’imaa Muummee. There homes where reportedly set ablaze and torched to the ground.

In the past few months, the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) have been conducting violent counter insurgency operations targeting Militants from the breakaway rebel faction dubbed the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA). The OLA faction broke ranks with the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) in late 2018.

The OLA has been waging an armed campaign against the Ethiopian government most notably in the Oromo region’s Wollega and Guji province. High casualties and displacement are reported among the civilian population.

Ethiopia’s Prime Minster Abiy Ahmed is a recent recipient of a Nobel Peace Prize and these latest string of human rights violations are sure to taint his legitimacy in the eys of the international community. But weather the international community takes decisive action Abiy Ahmed is yet to be scene.
