Barely a week after the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) granted the Sidama ethnic group a referendum on a regional autonomy outside the Southern Ethiopian Nations, Nationalities and People’s Region (SPNNR) another ethnic group , the Wolayta’s are demanding there own autonomy and the right to there own regional state..

Leaders of the party who held a press conference on Monday in the capital Addis Ababa said “we need a constitutional response to our demand,” reported by the Amharic branch of DW Germany.

Intellects, scholars and community leaders from the Wolayta ethnic group claim there right to regional autonomy is engrained in Ethiopia’s constitution. The Federal government of Ethiopia and the SEPDM, which is the political party of the SNNPR has not responded to these latest requests.

This latest development comes after the Sidama ethnic requested there own regional state outside the SNNPR. It’s widek believed by many experts within Ethiopia that string of claims made various ethnic groups in SNNPR will spark a chain reaction as other ethnic groups within SNNPR are expected to claim autonomy.
