Four points tied to the gathering in Djibouti between between Farmaajo and Muse Bihi that was negotiated by the governments of Djibouti and Ethiopia
ETHIOPIA : The political game play of Ethiopia’s new prime minister Abiy Ahmed includes a stable Somalia under his grasp.
1) Access to the port of Berbera and all major Somali seaports. This is crucial for authorities in Addis Ababa knowing Ethiopia remains landlocked.
2) Ethiopia fears that Somalia will align with #Egypt over Ethiopia in regards to the dispute over the Nile, which could potentially deal a serious blow to Ethiopia.
3) Thirdly, rights groups such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch recently published damming reports criticizing the prime minister for human rights abuses. On top of that the election crisis and the opposition parties firm stance opposing the government’s decision to postpone elections, which can easily lead to more turmoil in the country. To avoid this, Ethiopia has focused the public’s attention to developments in neighboring Djibouti.
Side Note : Ethiopia’s prime minster doesn’t seem to understand the importance of the #Ogaden struggle and the opportunity he has today but instead seems to have turned a blind eye to the region, the opposition and the human rights issues and is more preoccupied with petty politics outside the country
DJIBOUTI : After 20 years, Djibouti is now in the midst of a revolutionary uprising against president Geele. Inside Djibouti there are prisons and detention where people are tortured and brutalized. The uprising took a new phase following a video that appeared online showing a #Djiboutian pilot imprisoned in a jail with his body showing physical signs of torture. This led to widespread protests. The government was saved when the meeting took place as Djibouti displays itself as a crucial parcel in the region.
SOMALIA : The relationship between the regional states and the Federal government is worse than it’s ever been. Puntland and Jubaland have no relation with the federal government. The fight against the terrorists is yet to wield any results. The federal government is yet to extend its control outside Mogadishu and is even struggling to handle the deteriorating security situation in Mogadishu. The recent controversy at parliament. The way that Somalia is engulfed in problems, they’d rather focus on meeting peaceful region like Somaliland instead of addressing the burning issues that await to be addressed.
SOMALILAND: The administration in Northern Somalia that has pre occupied it’s constituents with the notion of international recognition over the past 27 years has led to hopelessness and despair. It’s gotten to a point where even large numbers of youth flee the region, many even going to southern Somalia.
The people of Somaliland should ask themselves what have they gained over the past 30 years ago. Has international recognition as a nation been achieved ? It’s actually backfired and the situation in the region has gotten much worse.
The administration in the North has been forced to use this latest meeting in Djibouti as a guide to keep up the charade of secession and most importantly shield the public’s attention away from there failures.
