Local contacts based in the Lower Jubba province of Somalia reveal a Kenyan military convoy struck a roadside bomb while on patrol.
According to sources in the area that spoke with Halgan Media on condition of anonymity, the contingent of Kenyan Defense Forces (KDF) where on there routine patrol before coming in contact with the improvised explosive device.
The troops departed a Kenyan military base in the town of Afmadow and where in route to the town of Dhobley. As the troops where traveling, one of the convoys struck a roadside bomb that was buried in the dirt road.
The subsequent explosion caused the convoy to catch fire and damaged the vehicle. The extent of damage is still not clear nor are the casualties. The Kenyan troops cordoned off the area following the blast till reinforcements arrived.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. It’s widely believed the Militant group Al Shabaab could be responsible. The militants routinely carry out attacks targeting Foreign troops throughout Somalia.
Thousands of Kenyan troops are deployed in the Lower Jubba province and neighboring Gedo province. These troops regularly come under attack by the Al Qaeda affiliated militant group Al Shabaab ever since Kenya’s invasion of Somalia in 2011 and the subsequent occupation that continues til this day.
