Al Shabaab militants launched a series of assaults targeting Ethiopian army bases in south and central Somalia.
The first assault targeted Ethiopian troops stationed at a base in the town of Baardheere in Gedo province.
The militants staged an attack on a military base housing Ethiopian troops and Pro Somali Govt militias at the airstrip of Baardheere. The ensuing gun battle led to fierce clashes between both sides.
The casualties remain unknown for the time being. The town of Baardheere has been the scene of fierce fighting in recent years as a result of the Ethiopian troop presence in the area, which is viewed by many as an occupation.
A similar incident occurred in the Ethiopian occurred town of Halgan, situated in central Somalia’s Hiiraan province. Al Shabaab fighters shelled an Ethiopian army base in the town of Halgan with a series of mortar rounds, as a barrage of shells reigned down on the base.
Smoke was spotted billowing over the skies shortly after the bombardment. Ethiopian troops set up defensive positions around the town once the shelling ceased according to local residents that spoke with Halgan Media.
The Al Qaeda affiliated militant group Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for both attacks on the pro militant website dubbed Somali Memo. Ethiopian troops and allied foreign forces routinely come under attack in Somalia.
Authorities in Mogadishu and there Ethiopian counterparts are yet to address these latest string of attacks carried out by the Al Qaeda affiliated armed group Al Shabaab.
