The district of Qoriile situated in eastern Ogaden remains one of the most densely populated areas in the region. Home to tens of thousands of people yet the district of Qoriile remains extremely under developed, making an already tough situation even more unbearable.

However the plight of IDP’s in Qoriile can be said to be far more excruciating than that of the local population. Taking a short trip to the outskirts of Qoriile, you can’t help but to spot a makeshift IDP camp in the distance.

This IDP camp in particular is home to at least 500 families. In nearly all cases these families where pastoralists and rural dwellers at one point but that all changed in the blink of an eye.

Many who made there way to the IDP camp near Qoriile have been living here for a number of years after loosing there Livestock to the reoccurring droughts that plagued the region.

Entire communities who onced thrived off there cattle and other livestock have now been made destitute with no other means of survival.

Talking a walk through the camp and there’s no sight of government assistance whatsoever, not even NGO’s. The camp lacks adequate supplies needed for survival, including proper sanitation.

Most families languishing at the camp consist of women of children, which are the most vulnerable in any society. Halgan Media correspondents based in Qoriile confirm despite these inhumane conditions at the camp, the local authorities have fallen on deaf ears.

The authorities overseeing Dollo province have not responded to our inquiries regarding the situation in the IDP camp near Qoriile, despite our repeated attempts contacting them.
