A blast targeting security forces occurred outside the coastal city of Bosaaso in Somalia’s autonomous Puntland region.

A military convoy carrying troops traveling on the periphery of Bosaaso on the volatile road linking the nearby districts of Af Urur and Ceel-Doofaar struck a roadside bomb. The vehicle was engulfed in flames and nearly ripped apart as a result of the subsequent blast.

The casualties from the blast remains unclear at the moment. However the Al Aqaeda affiliated Militant group Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement published on the pro militant website dubbed Somali Memo.

The autonmous Puntland region of Northern Somalia has been plagued by an uptick in Militant attacks as of recently. A series of bombing and assassinations targeting senior officials and attacks on civilian targets has nearly stretched the security apparatus to its last thread.

Both Al Shabaab and the ISIS branch of Somalia operate in the Puntland region. Both armed groups have been waging a relentless guerrilla war against the state, which has left countless Somalis dead.
