Security forces in Somalia’s autonomous Puntland regional state carried out a series of raids targeting suspected ISIS and Al Shabaab militants in the coastal city of Bosaaso.
The raids where carried out in densely populated neighborhoods across the city of Bosaaso, with a total of 10 suspected militants nabbed during the security sweep, according to Security sources that spoke with Halgan Media on condition of anonymity.
Furthermore sources confirm that Kalashnikovs, ammunition and suicide vests where seized during the counter terrorism operations that unfolded mid afternoon.
In recent months the Puntland region of Somalia has been plagued by a spike in terrorist attacks and high profile assassinations targeting prominent regional officials.
The regional administration of Sacid Cabdullahi Demi has been under intense public pressure to tackle the rapidly deteriorating security situation in the region, particularly the port city of Bosaaso.
Somalia’s autonomous Puntland region has been relatively safe compared to many parts the country, however the region (Puntland) has been facing a growing insurgency on multiple fronts.
The region is a stronghold for sleeper cells loyal to the Islamic State, commonly referred to as ISIS with hundreds of of both local and foreign fighters in the mountains of Bari province.
Likewise Al Shabaab insurgents operate in the region and routinely carry out attacks at will. The Al Qaeda affiliated Militants recently assassinated the governor of Mudug province in a suicide bombing this past May, with a similar attack in March of this year that killed the governor of Nugaal province.
Puntland Security Force (PSF) which is an elite US trained and funded paramilitary force has been at the forefront of the fight against terrorism in Northern Somalia’s autonomous Puntland region.
