The Al Qaeda affiliated Militant group Al Shabaab carried out another targeted killing in Somalia’s autonomous Puntland region. The latest killing occured today in the coastal city of Bosaaso.
Pistol wielding gunmen opened fire on a tax collection officer in the city center. The officer died instantly from the gunshot wounds according to the Pro militant website dubbed Somali Memo. The statement published on Somali Memo also stated the assasins stripped a weapon from the dead officers body prior to escaping the scene.
Seizing rifles and guns from lifeless bodies after carrying out a killing has been a long time hallmark of Al Shabaab. Experts in the past have compared this sickening ritual to a “badge of honor” for the deranged militants.
The tax collecting officer that was gunned in this latest incident has been identified as Maxamed Muuse. The authorities overseeing the autonomous Puntland region are yet to address these latest string of killings.
Today’s heinous killing in Bosaaso coincides with a bloody week in the Puntland region. It was just last night when an Al Shabaab suicide bomber carried out an attack targeting senior officials. The governor of Nugaal province Abdisalam Hassan Hersi was killed in the bombing. Two individuals including a former regional police commander where wounded in the same blast.
24 hours prior to the bombing in Garowe, Al Shabaab gunmen carried a hit in the coastal city of Bosaaso on Saturday killing a tax collection officer. The victim identified as Caynab Maxamed Dunge was reportedly gunned down while sitting inside a restaurant.
The mere fact that Al Shabaab have been able to carry out attacks for three consecutive days in the Puntland region, proves that the Militants are able to operate with immunity in the area or authorities have fallen short on there security objectives.
