Al Shabaab assassins gunned down a plain clothed (undercover) officer from Somalia’s National Intelligence & Security Agency (NISA) in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

The shooting occurred Tuesday night when Al Shabaab assassins wielding pistols opened fire on an intelligence officer in the Towfiiq neighborhood in northern Mogadishu.

The gunmen fled the scene on foot just moments after the shooting, followed by security forces who arrived in the scene and cordoned off the area.

The Al-Aqaeda linked armed group Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the assassination in a statement released on the pro militant website dubbed Somali Memo and identified the deceased intelligence officer by the alias of “Cagaweyne”.

On a similar note, Al Shabaab took credit for another assassination of an intelligence officer that same night, this time in the Lafoole neighborhood, which is situated west of Mogadishu.

Its not clear how the Al Shabaab assassins where able to pick off the identities and whereabouts of these intelligence officers prior to the double assassination in Mogadishu on Tuesday night.

In the past Al Shabaab have carried out numerous assassinations targeting members of Somalia’s intelligence agency, with both senior commanders and low level officers being targeted.

The Somali government has remained silent in the wake of these recent wave of assassinations to rock the capital Mogadishu.
