As election season inches closer in the US all eyes are on the state of Minnesota. The incumbent candidate Ilhan Omar faces off against Yusuf Haji, a local twin cities business owner.
Both candidates are vying over a seat in the contentious house of representatives. Congresswomen Ilhaan Omar has come under fierce scrutiny in recent years from members of her own Somali community.
Many have accused Ilhaan of neglecting the community after securing there vote. Minnesota’s 5th district compromises of Hennepin county, which is home to the largest Somali diaspora population in the Western world. In the past Congresswomen Ilhaan Omar campaigned to get grassroots support within her own community but has since ignored her key support base.
This has led to fierce criticism and backlash. The growing frustration within the Somali community has only grown, paving the way for opposition candidates like Yusuf Haji. A father of three and an alumni from St Cloud university. Mr Haji maintains his quest to unseat widely unpopular Congresswomen Ilhaan Omar.
