Armed clashes have led to the deaths of three police officers in the Wollega region of Western Ethiopia after deadly skirmishes between the neighboring communities of Benshangul and Oromia.
Police commander Geremew Assefa told state media that the police officers have come under attack while they were on routine duty. Eighty houses were also set on fire, according to the commander.
Scores of people have fled there homes after border clashes fueled by ethnic grievances continue to spiral out of control on the volatile Oromo-Benshangul border region according to state media.
The recent crisis in western Ethiopia began at the end of September when four officials from Kemashi Zone of Benishangul-Gumuz were killed in the Oromo region. The officials were killed on their way back from a joint security meeting with their counterpart in the Oromo region.
Deadly ethnic violence in areas bordering the Oromo and Benishangul-Gumuz region in Western Ethiopia have so far left at least 40 dead and displaced over 70,000 people.
