A peaceful anti government protest in Mogadishu turned violent when a plain clothed security agent opened fire on demonstrators.

The protests which began at the Banaadir junction ended with protesters scattering following a hail of bullets. No casualties or injuries arose from the live rounds that where fired.

However public uproar is growing with Somalis both at home and in the diaspora following the violent attack, which was caught on tape and went viral on the web.

Sources who declined to be identified due to confidentiality purposes confirm the gunmen is Bashir Qooreey, a local security officer that hails from the Soonkoy neighborhood in Mogadishu’s Hodan district.

The Somali government has been violently clamping down on the growing number of anti government protests in the capital, in the wake of national elections slated for early next year.
