Suspected US drones carried out a drone raid deep in the heart of Al Shabaab controlled territory in the volatile Lower Shabelle province of Somalia.
Per sources – Military aircraft, believed to be an unmanned aerial vehicle, commonly referred to as a “drone” launched several strikes targeting the headquarters of Radio Al-Furqan in the town of Kunyo-Barrow.
Smoke was spotted billowing from the sky following the US drone raid targeting Radio Al Furqan in the densely populated town of Kunyo-Barrow sparking widespread fears of civilian casualties.
It’s not clear at the moment, weather any casualties have arose from the strike, however in the past rights groups like Amnesty International have implicated the US for committing war crimes and mass atrocities in Somalia as a result of there deadly drone campaign.
Radio Al-Furqan is one of two FM radio stations linked to the armed group Al Shabaab and has been headquartered in the town of Kunyo-Barrow for the past 12 years, following the end of the US backed Ethiopian occupation of southern Somalia in early 2009.
The US air raid targeting Kunyo-Barrow is the first US drone strike of the year (2021) and coincides with a large scale movement of military aircraft at the US drone base at the Balidogle airfield. {click here more info)
