The Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) rebel group published a statement condemning the use of the colonial Amharic language in schools in the Oromo region of Ethiopia.
The militant movement reiterated the fact that Ethiopia’s constitution clearly states every regional state in Ethiopia is allowed to implement there own cultural and linguistic curriculum based on there respective ethnic states. As for Ethiopia’s case there are 9 official regional states based on ethnic borders.
The press release from the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) comes at a time in which the educational curriculum and the fate of Ethiopia’s official language remains a hotly contested issue in households and class rooms across the country.
Many marginalized ethnic groups view the Amharic language as a colonial dialect and the implementation of Amharic curriculum as an attack on there respective ethnic identities.
