Intense clashes rocked the Amhara region of Ethiopia for the past few days. According to a report published by Amhara Mass Media Agency (AMMA), a series of renewed clashes between ethnic Amhara’s and ethnic Qimat’s have taken place in a matter of days.
Based on a report by AMMA, an unspecified number of people where killed and wounded as a result of the violent clashes. The Amhara regional state security officials also claim via AMMA that an armed group of suspected ethnic Qimat paramilitaries opened fire as the region’s special force near the strategic city of Gonder.
Teshager Agegnehu, who is the head of Amhara region peace and security sector was quoted by AMMA as saying “ “Those who attempt to break Amhara region will not succeed. And if there are those who want to come to the region for this mission, we have the capability to defend ourselves”.
He added that the latest string of violence happened as the regional state is working on to resolve issues related to identity and administrative arrangements while emphasizing that it is a manufactured conflict.
The regional state believes that part of the plan was to block the Methema-Gonder road, which links Ethiopia with Sudan, and it seems to be the case that the road is closed at this moment.
We will keep you updated with the latest developments from the region.
