The Department of Defense (DOD) has shipped 2.9 million dollars worth of military equipment to prop up Ethiopia’s battered military, which has been battling insurgencies at home and abroad in neighboring Somalia.
According to a statement released by the US embassy in Addis Ababa that was broadcasted via state owned media, the equipment and hardware gifted to Ethiopia’s ruling Junta will be used to counter and subdue Al Aqaeda linked Militants in neighboring Somalia.
Ethiopia remains a key US proxy in the region and has been fighting America’s war on terror in Somalia for a number of years, with back to back incursions and invasions targeting Somali soil stretching as far back as 1996.
Ethiopia currently maintains a large troop presence in Somalia, with numbers estimated to be around 20,000. The bulk of these troops are occupying the following provinces of Bay, Bakool, Hiiraan, Gedo, and Galgaduud.
